What is Orenda?

Lasting Change Takes More Than Another Program.

Educational leaders are navigating complex challenges: improving student outcomes, strengthening instruction, developing leaders, addressing inequities, and bringing coherence to systems that don’t always work together.

Orenda helps make that complexity more manageable.

Since 1998, we’ve worked alongside educational leaders to strengthen the systems surrounding students. Rather than introducing another one-size-fits-all initiative, we build on what’s already in place—helping schools and districts create greater alignment, strengthen their people, and build the internal capacity to sustain progress over time.

When systems work better together, more students have access to the opportunities they deserve.

The historically underserved group rises faster, catching up to the highest-performing group where the two lines cross, marked as equity. True equity is achieved when X marks the spot.

When there is no longer a persistent achievement gap between racial and socio-economic student groups, we can all celebrate educational equity.

Why Orenda

Why Partner With Orenda?

  • We Know Schools

Our team includes experienced teachers, counselors, school leaders, district administrators, and instructional experts who understand what implementation looks like in the real world.

  • We Build With You

No two educational systems are identical. We listen first, then work alongside your team to build solutions around your context, priorities, people, and existing initiatives.

  • We Stay Close to the Work

Our work doesn’t end with a training or recommendation. We support leaders and teams as ideas move into practice.

  • We Focus on Systems, Not Quick Fixes

Meaningful improvement isn’t created by one program or person. We help strengthen the interconnected systems that shape what educators do and what students experience.

  • We Build Capacity

The goal isn’t dependence on Orenda. It’s developing the knowledge, alignment, structures, and leadership capacity your organization needs to keep improving on its own, long after our formal work together ends.

  • We Keep Students at the Center

Every decision ultimately comes back to one question: Does this create greater access and opportunity for students, especially our most vulnerable students?

What Partnership Looks Like

Real change happens alongside the people doing the work.

Across California, Orenda partners with school and district leaders to understand their challenges, strengthen existing systems, build leadership capacity, and turn shared priorities into practice.

Whittier has shown sustained improvements in student performance every year at every school on multiple indicators over the past 15 years. These improvements are more remarkable, taking into account that Whittier’s poverty rates have climbed during the same period.

Friday, November 6, 20262:15 PM – 3:15 PM PT

What does rigor actually look like in the classroom? Dr. Sarah Mott Gonzales and Dr. Erica Thomas of Orenda Education use California’s CAASPP item specifications for ELA Claim 1: Reading to show what grade-level rigor looks like in daily instruction, and how to redesign tasks so students do the right kind of thinking.

From our founders
